The PC Pete Mission Statement
Wednesday, August 04, 2004 - 11:55 AM
Hello,

I'm PC Pete. I've been using computers since I was six years old. Back in those days, when people talked about color monitors, they meant 16 colors. America Online was in it's infancy. I didn't get on the internet until years later, and even then, I was using AOL 2.5 -- and to think AOL is going to release AOL 10.0 soon!

Things have changed in the computer industry over the years. The proliferation of inexpensive components and the abundance of trained professionals has significantly lowered the costs of computing for consumers. As computers become more complex, the average computer user is left with a serious dilemma: either stay current with the evolving technology, or fall behind and remain vulnerable to data loss, corruption, or theft. Although computer security technology is always improving, the widespread availablity of insecure wireless access points, misconfigured firewalls, and poorly educated end-users provide malicious (and often well-informed) users the ability to exploit virtually any computer at their whim.

The hardware and software vendors try to make their products without flaws, but nothing is perfect. Forced to choose between ease-of-use and security, they often choose to focus on making their products user friendly rather than safe. Take wireless routers, for example. Wireless networking technology now allows complete plug-and-play within the home. No longer must an individual hire a contractor to install cabling throughout their house simply to share internet access. The convenience of wireless networking is unparalleled. The manufacturers of these wireless networking devices quickly learned that the average user was not concerned with their 'WEP' settings, or trying to decide what their optimal 'MTU' was. The high cost of product support forced the manufacturers to water down the software driving their devices. Now, wireless networking is easier than ever. A user needs only to plug in some cables and 'Voila!' The wireless network certainly will function, and the owner may never have a problem. But, they may not realize that any person with a wireless card can not only use their internet access, they can actually monitor every part of their internet access! If you believe your wireless network may be insecure, you're probably right. There are many ways to secure wireless traffic, and I would be happy to show you some of them.

But unfortunately, there are many other technologies that expose the average user other types of attacks -- some of which are enabled by default in Windows XP (advanced computer users may be familiar with security issues surrounding RPC and UPNP). Even worse are the problems with invasive spyware, adware, and popups. Microsoft has finally addressed some of these issues in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (which will be released in early August) -- but no blanket solution is perfect. Windows XP Service Pack 2 may in fact open up an entirely new can of worms for end users, who may find that the software is actually quite restrictive. Is there an effective balance between functionality and security? I say that yes, I believe there is -- but each user will have different needs that require individual configurations.

No matter what your needs are -- whether you have one computer or one hundred computers -- I would like to enthusiastically provide my advice to you. My goal is to put myself out of business by doing the job right the first time, every time. Of course, in reality, I would never be able to service every computer that had trouble -- but I would certainly like to try! For years I've helped my friends and family by providing honest and accurate advice in an expedient manner. Now, I invite you to join the people close to me in seeing what sets me apart from other technicians in my field.

Call me, and discover the PC Pete difference!

Yours Truly,

-P. Ubriaco
